April 26th, 2023
What a great day for us as the legendary Peter Kirsten signs up as a Border Boys ambassador.
Border Boys were in touch with Kirsy at the start of 2023 and floated the idea and concept of Border Boys past him with the aim of him becoming our second ambassador.
This was an interesting conversation and Kirsy was quick to respond with his shared love, passion and commitment of the Border region. After a failed trip to welcome him in person, (plane did not land due to foggy conditions) a second encounter was quickly arranged. On the 26th April 2023, Border Boys sat down with Kirsy for the day, completed a fantastic interview, had some lunch, listened to some great stories and got to the bottom of who “Captain Grumpy” really is (thanks to Brenden Fourie for that golden nugget).
Kirsy was presented with his official Border Boys shirt and cap and offered up his views on playing for Border Boys in a T20 match in August of 2023 and in the Ambassadors day match scheduled for June 2024.
As with all our ambassadors, we at Border Boys pride ourselves firstly on being a brotherhood and aligning ourselves with people that have served the Border region and in doing so leaving an indelible mark. Peter Kirsten is an individual that embodies this ethos, from arriving in the Border and attending Selborne Primary School to returning in 1990 and assisting with raising the profile of Border Cricket and helping them return to A-section cricket.
Over and above this, Kirsy has played sport at the highest levels, representing Border, Western Province, Derbyshire and South Africa in cricket. He had a fantastic career, captaining South Africa on 6 occassions from 1982-1989 during the rebel tours. Many of us forget that he was a great flyhalf, played for Western Province and represented the “Quaggas” in 1974 against the best ever British Lions team, narrowly losing 16-20.
We are thrilled to have Kirsy on board as an ambassador, encapsulating the same passions and ethos of the Border Boys and we can’t wait to see him turn out for some cricket, golf and a few glasses of red.
Welcome to Peter Noel Kirsten.
