Border Boys, their families and friends travelled to Cornwall for the August bank holiday weekend. We were hosted by the James family as we descended on the hamlet of Newall Green. Many braais took place, with a number of braaimasters showing off their skills and in some instances lack of! While no Springboks were consumed, the local butchery was a hive of activity on Saturday morning with the Border Boys stocking up on meat for the braai on Saturday night. Some ventured on a 10 mile bike ride along the Camel Trail heading into Padstow, whilst others headed off for a bit a retail therapy, followed by a walk on the lovely Trebarwith beach.

All the skills came out on Saturday night with the braaimasters making sure the clan of Border Boys were well fed and watered (a few beers were consumed along with the 201 bags of Kameeldoring). This was preceded by the Friday night antics at the local Sea View Farm Festival where Clackers (Ryan Mokawem) showed us how all the Selborne boys danced at their matric farewell all those years ago…

On Sunday, Border Boys played in a 30 over per side match against a strong Wadebridge team. Wadebridge made a quick start and the first wicket fell in the 7th over with the score on 76. Border Boys continued to fight but with a number of missed opportunities in the field, Wadebridge ended their innings on 300/8 after their 30 overs. The highlight of the Border Boys fielding was an excellent runout with a direct hit by Ryan Mokawem. Mokawem took 3 wickets and H James, Winson, Samler and Naude picking up a single wicket each.

Border Boys batted and the opening pair of Peter Pretorius (debutant) and Craig William (debutant) were quickly off the mark with a partnership of 37 off the first 4 overs before the wicket of Williams fell. The rest of the Border Boys batters toiled through the innings and we were all out for 138 in the 28th over. Pretorius (39) and Mokawem (29) being the pick of the batsmen.

Three debutants represented Border Boys in this match, namely Peter Pretorius, Christian James and Craig Williams. We offer a warm welcome to new players and it was great to see them in action. The James family are the 2nd Father/Son representation on the field with Border Boys and it was exciting to see this.

The club would like to thank the James family for hosting the weekend and their efforts. We would also like to thank the wives and families and friends of Border Boys who made this weekend a cracking success!
