The idea of Border Boys has been with me since 2018. As a South African living in Britain since 2001, I have always been fascinated by how many people from my home country live here. East London and the Border region is where I grew up for the first 24 years of my life. Some of my fondest memories were formed there and I wouldn’t change it for the world. What a great time and place to be be during the late 80’s and 90’s!
I’m always amazed at how poor I’ve been in keeping up friendships within the UK when most Slumtown legends live just down the road. Many keep in contact via social media by simply scrolling over a feed, but how many of us actually make the real effort to keep in touch with those from our past that shaped us, laughed with us, and moulded us to the very fabric of who we are? These are friendships that should never be lost and always cherished.
So, this is where Border Boys comes in. A community of people from the Border region of South Africa who live in the UK, looking to reconnect, rekindle old friendships and build on memories past and present. I am the first to blame for being slack, but my attitude has changed and now is the right time to relish all these great things from our past and what may be in our future. So as we start this little adventure I’d like to thank all that have been involved with the start of Border Boys and to Brett who has been a great sounding board.
Welcome to Border Boys.

Welcome to Border Boys.
We are a group of people from the Border region in South Africa that live in the UK, who get together for social activities and sporting events.
Originally founded on our love of cricket, we also love a good braai and enjoy hitting a few long drives down the fine fairways of the UK.
We aim to reflect on past memories and create new ones that are rooted in the Border region, and of course Numbers Dance Club, Buccaneers, School Derby Days, Nahoon Beach, Gonubie Boardwalk, Quigney locals and knowing how to dodge a good pothole or two. And of course not forgetting where the worlds’ greatest milkshakes are made, at the Friesland of course!
Some of our members are old school friends, others have played sport together, some have worked together and some simply come from the same town.
You even qualify to join us if you were merely passing through! We welcome all people of all ages – family plays an important role within Border Boys and we would not have it any other way.
We all know that the best thing about the Border region is the people and the love of brown shirts! And we don’t just mean the people who live there. We mean the people who have come from elsewhere and stayed, for a time or forever – the ones who have embraced life on the Border, and made it their own. They are our friends, our neighbours, and more importantly (to us), they are our brothers and sisters.
That’s why we started Border Boys. We wanted a place where we could get together and socialise, play a bit of sport and braai with our friends even if it is 9782 kms away in the UK. And if you’re like us, you’ve probably been looking for just such a place!
It doesn’t matter if you’re an old hand or a newbie – we just want to see you out there, having a great time with us!
