Border Boys interview Peter Kirsten!

Border Boys caught up with Ambassador Peter Kirsten for an exclusive interview.

This four part interview gives a great insight into Kirsy and his career. We covered a number of topics with the former South African international, from some of Kirsy’s proudest moments in the game to some of his lighter ones.

Indulging in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, that Kapil Dev mankad moment along with his favourite cricketing achievements, his cricketing mentors and future aspirations.

Kirsy recalls many past players he has come across and his history with the Border Cricket team during his time as captain and player.

One thing is for sure, Kirsy navigated his way through with lots of humour and nostalgia.

Part 1

In part 1, Kirsy speaks about some of his cricketing mentors, his best achievements on and off the field including that innings of 294 in an East London club game when the scoreboard was incorrect.  Kirsy also tells us about his encounters with the great Pakistani Javed Miandad.  Find out what Kirsy’s worst cricketing habit was and listen to Kirsy as he takes a trip down memory lane with the Border Cricket team of the 1990’s.

Part 2

In part 2, Kirsy remembers the 1992 Word Cup in Australia and the changeroom prankster that is Allan Lamb.  Kirsy gives us an insight into who the better cricketer is, Gary Kirsten or Peter Kirsten?  Eddie Barlow and Hylton Ackerman are spoken about fondly and Kirsy shares his love of the 1990’s GM Diamond cricket bat. We also hear about Kirsy’s backyard cricket antics with Ian and Tony Greig and that famous 1992 mankad moment with the great Kapil Dev.

Part 3

In part 3, Kirsy recalls a cricketing moment from Cape Town with his friend Charl Willoughby. Kirsy continues to open his envelope and has a surprise that takes him back to 1980 and his time at Derbyshire CCC. We find out who his favourite cricketer is and Kirsy recalls fond memories of Gordon Minkley, Sid Knott, Ian Howell and Greg Hayes.

Part 4

In this final part, Kirsy receives a reply from fellow ambassador Brenden Fourie and explains why he decided to accept the role of Border Boys ambassador. Kirsy gets to the bottom of the Border Boys slogan “Share the boerie…Protect your Castle!” and gives his take on it.
