Border Boys reached out to Brenden Fourie in October 2022 in hope the he would become our very first ambassador. Brenden is deeply rooted in the Border region and spent many years in East London and he is the type of person we were looking for as a Border Boys ambassador (“Brenden Fourie, a solid citizen” – Peter Kirsten 2023).
On a bright Sunday in February 2023, Border Boys met with Brenden in a local eatery in Winchester, Hampshire. After a few fresh coffees and some discussion about who and what Border Boys is, Brenden became our first ambassador. We are thrilled to have him with us.
Brenden provided valuable views about his involvement and how the ethos of Border Boys fits in with his personal outlook. Brenden assisted greatly in providing some of his old playing kit, thus helping us with the concept and the design of the very first Border Boys kit. Brenden’s help is greatly appreciated.
Born in the Border region and completing his schooling at the colleges of Selborne, Brenden represented Border cricket at the height of its transition from the B-section to A-section. In 1989, Brenden received a bursary to study at UPE and Border offered to take over the bursary so Brenden continued to play cricket for Border. Brenden was privy to some top secret information and some potential developments on the Border that were on the horizon in 1990 and was shortly under the captaincy of Peter Kirsten who moved back to the Border in that same year.
Brenden achievements are many, one of them being a cricketing hat-trick on debut whilst playing for the Impalas in the Benson & Hedges series in 1989 against Natal. Throughout the 90’s Brenden was a permanent member of the Border Cricket team and has been written about narrowly missing out on national selection by a fellow cricketer who represent South Africa over a long period of time. Brenden has worked for the Northants Cricket Board from 2001-2003. Brendan played for Leicestershire in 1994 v Oxford University and has represented the Northamptonshire Cricket Board in a number of Cheltenham and Gloucester matches (one day cricket).
To become a Border Boys ambassador there are a number of traits the club consider before approaching an individual. Brenden Fourie is an excellent match for what the concept of the Border Boys is. His willingness and support embodies the ethos of the Border Boys, always remembering our roots and looking out for each other. Brenden is extremely motivated within his personal life, devoting much of his time to his family. We are proud to call him a Border Boy.
